The formal chart of an organisation
is designed to handle routine and easily anticipated problems, but unexpected
situations arise which require the formation of new ties so that the
corresponding extra tasks can be properly accomplished. The characterisation of
the structure of such informal networks behind the formal chart is a key
element for successful management. We analyse the complex e-mail network of a

Abstract: We analyze a key problem
in organization theory and design, namely the potential tension between
authority (i.e., the power to make decisions which guide the decisions of
another person) and the discretion of employees (i.e., the ability of an agent
to control resources including his own human capital). The problem is rooted in
the fact that in organizations, decisions rights are always loaned rather than
owned; a hierarchical superior can always in principle overrule a hierarchical
inferior. Keywords: Managerial intervention, credible delegation, new
organizational forms, organizational economics.

Abstract: The present study
examined the contribution to employees' openness to change of the content,
context, and process of organizational transformation. The threatening
character of organizational change (content variable), trust in executive
management, trust in the supervisor, history of change (context variables), and
participation in the change effort (process variable) were predicted to have a
positive effect on openness to change. Hypotheses were tested in two separate
studies (N = 828 and N = 835) using experimental vignettes. A first study
crossed four variables in a fully crossed 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 design

Nicholas
Athanassiou , College of Business Administration, Northeastern University
The purpose of this article is
threefold. First, it surveys the
management literature to identify and discuss the trends in empirical studies
that use social networks concepts and that have been published in leading
management journals from 1989 to 1999. Then, within this broader set of
articles, the subset that focuses on MNCs is examined. Second, this article
briefly discusses how certain key concepts about multinational corporation
(MNC) structure and its management can be viewed from a social networks
perspective. Third, it summarizes the constructs examined by recent (1982-1996)
empirical studies of international strategic management literature. The article
then concludes that such constructs can be studied through a social networks
lens.
